Shipping to Streaming: Is this shift green?

Streaming movies over the Internet has become very popular in the recent years. It is giving a stiff competition to the alternative method of DVD being shipped to the customer, after an order is placed online. It is likely that in future, the online streaming method will displace the DVD shipping method. In this paper, we evaluate the environmental impact of such a paradigm shift in delivering movie content. We compare the total energy consumed and the carbon footprint of the two methods. We find that whilea non-energy optimized streaming of a movie through the Internet consumes 88% energy of shipping a movie, its carbon footprint is 119% of that of shipping. However by greening the transmission of the movie the energy consumption and carbon footprint of streaming can be reduced to 76% and 88% respectively of that of shipping.
